World Premiere: 2009 Istanbul Film Festival
by PELİN ESMER (TR/FR/DE 2009, 110’)
At the fourth floor of the Emniyet Apartment Building Mithat Bey has managed, despite facing many threats, to protect a collection that he has been working on for years and that has left him with only a small space to live in. The search for new pieces to maintain the continuity of his collection can lead him anywhere in Istanbul. For Mithat Bey, Istanbul is as unlimited as his collection. For the concierge Ali, however, Istanbul is limited to the Emniyet Apartment Building and its surroundings. Moving into the city from a small village with his family, Ali began to work in the building. When his daughter contracted Asthma due to humidity, the rest of the family was forced to move back to the village until the conditions could be improved, leaving Ali by himself. When the neighbours decide to have the building demolished and rebuilt, out of fear of earthquakes and the wish for a more valuable house, Mithat's most challenging struggle to save his collections begins.
The building becomes the shared destiny of the two men living alone. Their relationship that begins with a shared interest in continuing the collection turns a new page when Mithat Bey hands Istanbul over to Ali and ends with them inadvertently changing each other’s destiny.
